COURSE DESCRIPTION
This is a 2-week course designed to educate Counsellors how to provide psychoeducational support to the parents/guardians of children who are underperforming academically by utilizing a prescription-based approach to resolving or reducing incidents of academic underperformance.
It will provide a theoretical framework for exploring the inner world of academic underperformance and the system developed to help parents and guardians support their children and wards in overcoming it. The course will also examine the challenges faced by parents and guardians confronted with the issue of academic underperformance resulting from the COVID-19 pandemic.
COURSE RATIONALE
The mission of the Caribbean Graduate School of Theology (CGST) is to partner with members of the Caribbean Evangelical Theological Association and other like-minded institutions to offer graduate level programmes in a variety of fields, in the major languages of the Caribbean in order to deploy godly men and women who will positively transform the Church and Society to the glory of God.
This course will provide the participants with an understanding of effective psychoeducational support systems needed to empower parents/guardians and their children to excel academically and ultimately change the statistics of academic failure and transform lives. It will equip the participants to transform the lives of parents/guardians, their children/wards and ultimately the Church and Society.
The overall vision and mission of the course is to equip counsellors who will provide the psychoeducational support needed by parents/guardians as they seek to fulfill their role in eliminating the identified learning gaps created by the COVID-19 Pandemic.
COURSE OBJECTIVES
The primary goals and objectives of the course will include:
- Educating counsellors how to support parents/guardians who seek to help their children/wards bridge the learning gaps created by the COVID-19 pandemic.
- Teaching counsellors how to guide parents/guardians in identifying pre-existing learning gaps and those created by the pandemic.
- Bringing awareness to the issue of learning disabilities/challenges and the resources available to parents in dealing with those challenges.
- Exploring other challenges such as medical, psychological, and socioeconomic problems that affect learning, retention and general academic performance.
- Recommending solutions for the elimination of learning gaps.
- Introducing the concept of a prescription-based approach, tailor-made for each child.
- Providing resources needed to guide parents/guardians on what to do and where to get help beyond the school system.
